Mislabeled Sharwil avocado trees from La Verne Nursery

Share

When La Verne Nursery in Southern California started selling Sharwil avocado trees to retail nurseries around five years ago, I heard some people doubting they were Sharwil. I saw photos of these trees and they didn’t look like Sharwils to me either.

I forgot about this until a few days ago when I visited a yard with a “Sharwil” tree that had been grown by La Verne in 2022. The tree was unquestionably not a Sharwil. It had an A-type flowering schedule and the leaves, stems, and branches all looked unlike any Sharwil I’ve ever seen. But what was it? Out of the varieties I know, it looked most like Jan Boyce.

Does anyone else have a tree they bought labeled as Sharwil in the past five years or so that had been grown by La Verne? Has it fruited? Which variety is it actually?

I posted a photo of the tag that went on all these trees.

By the way, I contacted La Verne, which is now owned by Everde, and was told that the manager who might have known about this topic no longer worked there, unfortunately.
