REVIEW: General Mills Trix Oatmeal – Junk Banter

Who knew that putting cereal in cereal is all it would take to get me to eat more cereal?!

General Mills Instant Oatmeals

General Mills is trying their hand at the other cereal, introducing five instant oatmeals inspired by some of their classic cereals. The flavors are:

  • Trix Oatmeal
  • Lucky Charms Oatmeal
  • Cinnamon Toast Crunch Oatmeal
  • Cocoa Puffs Oatmeal
  • Cookie Crisp Oatmeal

If there was even a debate about which cereal was better (hot or cold), that debate is officially over. When you take one and put it in the other to make the second better, you’ve officially declared which one rules and which one needs help. Just wave the white flag, game over.

They’re gunning for straight up domination of the cereal game by making the first hot cereal I actually want to eat.

This review is part of a series. Today’s General Mills instant oatmeal is:

General Mills Trix Oatmeal

General Mills Trix Oatmeal

General Mills Trix Oatmeal is fruit flavored oatmeal with a colorful crunchy topping.

It’s interesting that they didn’t use actual Trix for the topping and instead developed (or sourced) some kind of colorful Rice Krispies knockoff.

Inside the box of Trix Oatmeal, you’ll find separate packets of the fruit flavored oatmeal and separate packets of the cereal topping.

The oatmeal itself tastes so much like Trix, it’s impressively stupid. And I have to say it makes for a really fun oatmeal flavor. The sweetness isn’t dialed up to normal Trix so it still eats like an oatmeal. But I can’t say I’ve ever had an oatmeal flavor this fun before.

Curiously, the oatmeal tastes like Trix but the cereal topping doesn’t. These crunchy rice pieces are generically flavored and overall, don’t really work here. The heat from the oatmeal gives them this weird, crunchy-but-chewy texture that don’t do anything but add color and get in the way.

Still, the oatmeal itself is so unique and accurate that I highly recommend Trix-lovers pick this up for a healthier alternative to the iconic cereal.

Burning Questions:

  1. Silly rabbit, oatmeal is for kids? I know, it doesn’t work.
  2. Why didn’t they use actual Trix? Great question!
  3. They should have done fruit-shaped oats. One thing at a time, man.
