McDonald’s Grandma McFlurry features vanilla soft serve mixed with butterscotch-flavored crumbles and butterscotch-flavored syrup.
I picked one up for $3.99 (versus $3.79 for the M&M’s or Oreo McFlurry). The extra 20 cents seems to cover the cost of the syrup.
The idea here is to offer the flavor of a stereotypical candy (butterscotch) you might find at your grandma’s and offer it in McFlurry form. Basically, it’s a butterscotch McFlurry but with a little bit of a story.
The vanilla soft serve came swirled with a good amount of both butterscotch-flavored crumbles and syrup. The soft serve was smooth and thick enough to stand a spoon in.
The butterscotch-flavored syrup was more sweet than rich with a milder caramelized buttery taste than you get with a toffee syrup. The creaminess of the vanilla soft serve went well with it and added some of that missing richness.
The crumbles were good for a just a hint of butterscotch and were more notable for a crumbly, cookie-like crunch. According to the ingredients, it’s mostly formed of sugar, oil, and milk.
Overall, McDonald’s Grandma McFlurry was good but not great. It had a decent flavor and enjoyable textures. If your grandma was/is the type to stock up on hard butterscotch candy, the McFlurry might make for a nostagic kick for you but my grandmother was more of a lemon drop and Milky Way person.
